Why luxury vinyl is often referred to as "affordable prestige"

Luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) is a realistic echo of wood, stone, or tile and is inspired by nature. It is waterproof and durable, making it ideal for kitchens, baths, and laundry rooms and stylish enough for any room in the house, including living and bedrooms. It comes in a wide assortment of patterns, styles, and designs to match up with your home's decor.

Form + function

Appearance is the "form" part. Images are taken and printed with high definition photography, so images are clear, vibrant, and accurate. You’ll see every wood grain, knot, wormhole, as well as color and veining variations in any stone. The product is deeply embossed for depth, dimension, and textured appearances such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, and distressed. Finishes come in matte, gloss, or high gloss colors.

LVF can be cut into planks to mimic hardwood boards (luxury vinyl plank, or LVP) or square tile-sized pieces called LVT Flooring. Many feel the extra seams add to the realism. Some take it even further by using grout, which now comes in various colors and is considered a design tool.

Durability: the "function" part of the equation

This vinyl should measure at least 8-mm or 9-mm thick, but, for vinyl plank, you might go as high as 10-mm or 12-mm for the authentic hardwood feeling. The top layer is a transparent melamine wear layer that protects the floor from scratches and scuffs and keeps spills at the surface. Wear layers should measure 20-mils or more.

Cores are related to waterproofing. Yours might be the typical vinyl composite core or a WPC or SPC for even more excellent protection. WPC (wood plastic composite) or SPC (stone plastic composite.) will not peel or ripple no matter how much water they experience, or for how long. SPC is a rigid core, while WPC is softer and more flexible.

This vinyl is also easy to care for with just a mop or broom. Installation can be a simple floating floor. The pieces click together and then hover over the subfloor with no nails or glue needed. Subfloors need only to be clean, dry, and level.
